Parent-Child Therapy

Attachment support for little ones and their grown-ups

Parent-child therapy is a play-based, relationship-focused therapeutic modality offered for young children and their primary caregivers. Sessions are held in person in Northampton, MA.

Parent-child therapy focuses on strengthening primary relationships as a central resource for building secure attachment, trust, and connection. This approach can be especially beneficial with adoptive and foster families as well as families seeking support…

  • Strengthening the parent-child bond

  • Building skills to effectively navigate challenging moments together

  • Understanding your child’s underlying needs and development

  • Healing from shared trauma

  • Alleviating stress and sharing moments of positive, playful connection

What you can expect from a parent-child therapy session:

For parents with infants/young toddlers: Sessions focus on playful connection and co-regulation using play, touch, movement, and song in addition to support with parenting challenges, difficulties adjusting to family life, and questions about development.

For children over 3: Sessions focus on building connection, trust, and relational ease with your child by joining their play world. You may find your child enacting real life scenarios or exploring play themes around loss, anxiety, separation, control, etc. Sessions may involve role playing scenarios your child needs help processing or preparing for. They may involve expressive arts activities, movement games, or mindfulness exercises.

Regardless of age my highest aim is to build on the strengths inherent in your relationship to support the process of co-regulation between you and your child. Co-regulation involves responding to your child in ways that are soothing to both of your nervous systems. This is the foundation for your child’s ability to develop their own self-regulation skills as they grow. Learn more about co-regulation.
